Alumni series Rynes Teach Away story [Video]
Alumni series Rynes Teach Away story [Video] Meet Ryne Holstrom. Ryne recently attended the Teach Away job fair in Atlanta, where both he and his wife Grace landed their dream jobs teaching in China. Ryne and family are all big into adventure and hiking - luckily, China happens to be the ideal teaching destination for outdoor enthusiasts! Growing up in a home of educators in Portland, Oregon, teaching is well and truly in Ryneâs blood. He and Grace met at Northern Arizona University, where Ryne was awarded a scholarship to play football and married in their senior year. They have since welcomed two adorable little boys (Reed, four years old and Everett, sixth months). Both he and Grace are currently in their sixth year of teaching - Ryne as a biology and chemistry teacher and Grace as a special education and elementary teacher. To say that Ryne is a pretty busy guy right now is a bit of an understatement. Not only is he juggling a full-time teaching job while taking care of his two little boys with Grace, heâs also studying for his master's degree in educationadministration. And if he wasnât already busy enough, over the next few months, he will also be doing some blogging on Teach Away, sharing why his family decided to relocate abroad, how their job hunt went, their experience making the big move overseas and offering lots of how-to advice for other aspiring international educators. So get ready for a great mix of personal reflection and practical tips - oh, and maybe a few photos of their family adventures in China, too!
Start Med School
The Fitness Routine to Practice Now Before You Apply to/Start Med School pixabay.com Meal prep Even if you are about to start the application process, and med school is feeling far away, it is never too early to start planning for your med life. Since you will be on call, working, taking classes, and getting in your hours, eating will fall on the back burner, especially if you have two seconds to leave your house and choose to run out without food instead of being late. To cope with your busy schedule, itâs a good idea to get into the habit of meal prepping now, so itâs already a big part of your routine when you start school. How exactly do you get into meal prepping? There are tons of mediums for you to choose from when figuring out how you want to meal prep, and what foods will be easy and healthy to make and eat all week. You can check out food YouTube channels that will take you through step by step, look on Pinterest for some great ideas, check out fitness books or magazines, and look into meal prepping blogs. With so much content out there, you are bound to find some things that you will like! To cut down on time, most meal preppers pick an off-day and prep everything for the week. While this will take a few hours out of your off day, it will save you so much time when you are on the go and will ensure that you are fueling your body to keep yourself going through those long shifts. Plus, if you start now before you are in med school, you will already have a few recipes down by heart, making the prep time cut in half when you are busting it out before your start of the week at work. Exercise routine Being as busy as you will be with med school, it may seem impossible to fit a workout in, so start planning ahead with exercises that you can do in short bursts or while you are on the go. First, look into some fitness routines that are 20 minutes or less, for when you want a workout fix but donât have enough time to go to the gym. I love kickboxing and ballet barre for these quick bursts that you will feel in the morning. You can also scope out the area near and around your med school, and plan your walk to work or on your breaks accordingly. Maybe there are stairs nearby that you can jog, or a nice path that you can walk or bike instead of drive when heading to class. When you donât have a lot of time, it really is all about improvising. You can also invest in a gym membership to a place like 24 Hour Fitness, since they will be open whenever you have time to fit in a quick workout. They even have classes beginning as early as 5:00 a.m., so you might be able to squeeze in a half hour full body workout after/before a long shift. Schedule in the essentials Now is the time to look at your calendar and plan out the essentials that you still need in your life, like getting enough sleep, having some downtime (even if itâs just an hour), and also making time for social endeavors. You wonât be able to see your friends and family as much as you currently do, but with the right amount of planning, youâll still be able to squeeze in coffee dates or a trip to the movies. If possible, you also want to enjoy your free time as much as you can now, and make a pact with yourself to put quality time and sleep in your hectic schedule as much as you can. You can only keep with a go-go-go schedule for so long before you eventually burn out, so if you plan ahead, you might be able to help prevent that from happening. These are just a few ways to get into the âfitness routineâ of being a med student before you even are one officially! Planning is your best friend, and with a bit of work, youâll feel less overwhelmed and will still be able to do many of the things you enjoy. Good luck! Think to Play Office Politics You Have to Play It Dirty - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Think to Play Office Politics You Have to Play It Dirty - Introvert Whisperer Think to Play Office Politics You Have to Play It Dirty? I did too, until I discovered⦠Like a lot of people, I used to think Office Politics was only about people who played dirty with each other. They were people who would smile and be friends while figuring out how to undermine your efforts and make you look bad. The rest of humanity did their best to stay under the radar while the mud slinging was taking place. Despite all of the nuclear fallout, it is often difficult to not be impacted in some way. I want to help you accelerate your career. Connect with your Free Instant Access to my eBook on how to construct your Career SMART Goals â"CLICK HERE I discovered that like many things in our society, we tend to notice the most outrageous, obnoxious examples of something and ignore the rest. Is it possible that Office Politics is not always bad? In a word: YES! Itâs important to understand that âpoliticsâ no matter if itâs office politics exists all the time whenever you assemble a group of people. Iâm sure that is a shocking revelation but true. Letâs look at what Politics is, why it is important to understand and how you can play it well without turning into a person people avoid. I think youâll change your opinion of it. In its simplest form, office politics is about building relationships in order to achieve some kind of end result. Itâs how things get done and itâs done 100% of the time on all jobs. Our jobs are always dependent on our interactions with others. Also, when I say âjobsâ or work, it doesnât have to be paid work either. If you belong to a neighborhood association, parent-teacher organization or volunteer, all of those things have no income but there is still politics going on. Any time you get a group of people together you have a dynamic that soon forms. Generally, it starts with a person seeking to influence others to do something. That isnât a bad thing most of the time. People need to sell others on their ideas most of the time in order to get them to give their resources. Those resources can include money, time and skills. In the workplace, we influence people to support and take action on everything from helping with a project to promotions. In other words, office politics is a constant. Once you start paying attention, most of the time Office Politics is taking place and when it is positive we either donât notice it or call it something nice like âgroup harmonyâ. What makes this important to you? Office politics happens all the time and it happens as a result of the relationships each person forms. Some people think that all they should have to do is show up, do their work and go home. They think they shouldnât have to befriend people at work. Those people are the ones that are most damaged by office politics because no one at work is there to support them and that is a huge problem. You canât function like that. No one is autonomous, ever. You have to think of yourself like a cog in a watch, each cog interconnecting with others in harmony to make the watch tell time. If you arenât âmeshingâ with others, you create problems for them and you. Sooner or later, you will feel like you are working in a hostile work environment. Itâs almost a primitive reaction when a person doesnât fit in a group, that the group wants the outlier to either integrate or leave. It may seem like people are then playing dirty office politics with you as the brunt of what is transpiring. When I say you put your career at peril is because the situation Iâm painting means that you not only wonât get vital support and information to perform your job well but people can openly want you gone. Clearly, none of that inspires a desire to promote you no matter how skilled you are. Itâs all connected, it wonât be fun AND your career will crater. What do you do? Easy peasy.(yes, I said this and Iâm disgusted with myself) You form good working relationships with people around you at work. This includes the boss and other people in management. Many people are too intimidated by management to feel like they can form a relationship with them. If this is you, you need to snap out of it. Management didnât instantly show up as management. They are regular people like you who simply have a different job as you. They most likely had to put in the time and demonstrate some capability so they would get promoted but to be âawe-struckâ by management does nothing for you, your career or the other person. The reason why forming good work relationships is easy is because you come in contact with a number of people routinely to get your work done. You may be so focused on your work that you ignore the few extra minutes it takes to connect at a personal level. If youâre like a lot of introverts, getting personal may have its challenges. The easiest way to start developing a relationship with a work mate is to show interest in them by asking questions. Start with the work they do and progress to interests they have outside of work. A vital part thing of getting to know the other person is to learn what is important to them professionally. When you can understand where a personâs priorities are, you are better able to support them. When you offer support to another person, it can be a gesture that will solidify your relationship and trust in you. Trust is a funny thing. For the most part, we trust each other but only up to a point. From there, our actions dictate if we endow the relationship with more or less trust. When our actions demonstrate that we have the other personâs interest in mind, the level of trust goes up. On that basis, the office politics is formed. We support and promote people we trust. People we trust are positioned to influence our decisions and actions. When we donât penetrate the superficial nature of simply working at someoneâs side, we donât allow trust and understanding to form. You have to dig deeper and then show the other person you understand whatâs important to them. Positive v/s Negative or Dirty Everything Iâve outlined is true no matter if the politics is positive or negative. What makes Office Politics negative is when actions and decisions are made AT otherâs expense. Positive Office Politics happens when it is done for the benefit of the business and in support of others. This means that even if some people are building trust and support of one another, the influence that is transpiring, may be to advance one personâs objectives while destroying another personâs in the process. It doesnât have to end up this way but people who are jealous or competitive only see one possible outcome and that is to push back others as a means of advancing. I personally like to think that people who act like this will have karma visited upon them 10x. I hope by this point you have discovered what I did and that is Office Politics is all around us and you can either play it well or be crushed by it. The fun thing to recognize is that itâs all about the relationships you form and who doesnât need another person in their corner? Power-Influence-Office Politics: it comes down to your Strategic Relationships and understanding of how you build each one of these elements. Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them.
Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them. Raise Your Guitar Game with Arpeggios. ChaptersWhat are Arpeggios? Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar? How to Play Arpeggios for Rhythm GuitarUsing Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosIf you want to get better at guitar and one day play classics like Led Zeppelinâs Stairway to Heaven - or the famous slow rock Still Loving You by Scorpions - you need to work on one guitar technique in particular: arpeggios. But how do you get started? Are there guitar tutorials? What are the basics you need to know before you start to learn guitar? These things are essential for knowing how to play the guitar - for both rhythm guitar and for guitar solos, for music theory and for guitar practice.Arpeggios are a basic guitar technique and one of the first things you should learn as you begin to play.Lots of musicians use them, whether theyâre playing rock, hard-rock (Slash), blues (Clapton) or jazz guitar.Arpeggios are one of those tools that are great for jamming and improvising, because they consist of taking the no tes of a chord and playing them separately. So, rather than taking a guitar chord as played altogether, arpeggios all you to play the notes at different times.Whilst this helps you to practice, and understand, your guitar chords, it's more than that too.A Bit of TheoryArpeggios are intimately linked to learning your guitar chords and they are often taught along with the chords themselves. This is particularly true of music theory, in which you are tested, for ear training, on the sound of the major scale - say the C major - and the harmonic structure of the corresponding chord shapes. These arpeggios are the basis of many melodies - including those of your favorite songs - so they are worth learning. If you want to improve your guitar playing technique, the arpeggio of a chord contains the same notes as the chord. Knowing the notes of the chord is a key part of playing its arpeggio. The base note of the chord will normally become the tonic note of the arpeggio. However, there are as ma ny variations of an arpeggio as there are notes in a chord. There are two different types of chords - major and minor. A minor chord has a root or base note, minor third, and perfect fifth, while a major chord has a root, major third, and a perfect fifth. So for either triad, an arpeggio would begin with the base note, followed by the third and then the fifth. For example, in G major the dominant note is G, and it would be followed by B and D.Master the art of fingerpicking with arpeggios. Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar?Arpeggios can sometimes be considered finger picking, since itâs a method that consists of playing the strings of your guitar one by one, instead of playing them all at once. This is a soothing style that is great as a backdrop to singing, as the melody will stay soft and soothing.Specifically, here, we are using this style of guitar for rhythm guitar - i.e. to accompany a voice or another instrument.Knowing how to play arpeggios means that you can play many dif ferent chords and tab sets. Arpeggios complement the other combinations of notes and sounds with their melodious and harmonious background - but without giving that heaviness that strumming would give the piece. In popular guitar music, you canât really just play arpeggios on their own. Playing arpeggios is a great exercise to practice your guitar, but it may quickly become boring for you and your audience if they arenât accompanied by other instruments, rhythms, or a singer. But they also may well not. In classical guitar music, whole pieces can be made of arpeggios, and there is nothing boring about it at all. Arpeggios allow you to play very complex chord progressions - that are incredibly interesting to listen to. Check out Bach's Cello Suites for some incredible uses of arpeggios.Arpeggios are often recommended to beginners as an exercise because they help to build up your experience playing guitar and help you to learn more about the instrument and the chromatic and melodic structure of the fretboard. Two Styles of Playing ArpeggiosThere are two different styles of playing arpeggios on your guitar - the vertical and the diagonal method. In the vertical method you play one or two notes per string. In the diagonal method, you play at least two notes per string, which allows you to play arpeggios based on 4 note chords. Why Play Arpeggios? The loops in arpeggios are repetitive patterns on the neck of the guitar. This is great for any guitar player to practice their technique.Playing arpeggios will help you play faster and more precisely in general - the speed of your playing is very important because each note is played back and forth in a range that goes up and down.Your fingers will become quicker and more agile - think of the amazing Django Reinhardt who played arpeggios with only two fingers! With or Without a PickOften people use a pick to play guitar. However, arpeggios can easily be played with your fingers - in what we refer to as 'fingerstyle'.Each m ethod has its advantages and disadvantages. Playing with a pick will give you more control as you pick strings - however, it is a technique for higher skill levels to cross strings whilst picking quickly. Playing with your fingers will allow you to go faster - as you can cross strings naturally.Thereâs also the option of using a long fingernail - youâll get a sound close to that of a pick, but with your fingers.Itâs all about using the thumb of your right hand to play the three bass strings - E, A, and D.The nice thing about chords is that you can learn the arpeggios easily too!Next, place each finger on a string.Put your index finger on GMiddle finger on BAnd ring finger on E.Each finger goes in a specific order, and it will be numbered on the guitar tabs:1 for your index finger2 for the middle finger3 for the ring fingerand 4 for your pinky. The Position of Your HandTo gain flexibility and avoid a cramp, the position of your wrist is crucial. It should be slightly bent, so t hat it almost makes a right angle from your forearm. However, make sure that you donât exaggerate the bend; the shape should stay natural.Using Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.By breaking down the chords and learning them as arpeggios, itâll be easier for you to learn the chords, point blank. However, there is another way to use your arpeggios. Working on arpeggios will help your improve your jamming and composition. During an arpeggio youâre just playing up and down a sole chord, which is a great way to frame your guitar solos - but you don't have to use these arpeggio shapes as whole units. To explain this better, let's have a brief look at the theory of soloing. What is a Guitar Solo? and How is it Relevant to Arpeggios? If you want to play jazz guitar, or blues guitar, you're going to need to learn how to solo and how to improvise. This will come in handy in rock guitar songs too - but most guitar teachers teach it through jazz.We know that you are beginner guitar player, and might not really yet know how to play guitar. However, this stuff, although a little complex, is dead important. When guitar players solo, what are they doing? Just playing random notes? Or is there something special going on here?Every jazz standard, or famous blues song, is based around a chord progression, in which major chords, minor chords, and every other sort of chord that's used follows sequential chord changes. If the piece is in the key of C, say, this C will be the root note of the piece. Now, a C chord is made up of C, E, and G. (The same is true of the C major arpeggio, obviously.) So, when the rhythm section of the jazz band plays a C major chord, the soloist knows that any of the notes C, E, or G will sound nice over the top of this chord. If the soloist plays a C#, however, he might have hit a wrong note. But the C chord will ultimately change (because the best guitar songs or jazz standards ain't gonna stay on the same chord the whole way). Say it moves to E. The notes of t he E arpeggio are E, G#, and B. Now, we have to play some different notes over the top (because playing a G - as you would over a C chord - might sound a little strange).Throughout all these different chord changes, a good guitarist will be able to play notes that make sense in their solos. This happens by learning the arpeggios and turning them into interesting melodic lines that, in the guitar world, we call 'guitar licks' or just 'licks'.If you are serious about soloing, you will need to learn some scales - the pentatonic, the harmonic minor, the blues scale, the mixolydian, if you are feeling out there - as well as the chords that these can be played above. However, the arpeggios provide an incredibly easy way to remember these, as the arpeggios are halfway between a chord - any chords, from jazz chords to open chords, to barre chords - and its corresponding scale.Working on an ArpeggioThere are plenty of ways to practice arpeggios - and if you take a guitar lesson, you will def initely learn more. But here we want to suggest some ways to incorporate your arpeggios into your jazz or blues licks. These are best done when you have the basics of arpeggios down a little.Arpeggios, if you play just three of the notes together, are known as triads. These are like the bare bones of the chord. Try it. You need to make sure you only have one note on each string.Once you have an arpeggio down, try and find different places on the fingerboard where you can play the same arpeggio. So, for the C major arpeggio, where else can you play that?Donât hesitate to work on both major and minor chords. And, when you are ready, and a seventh in their too.Extended arpeggios - another way to play an arpeggio is to do them all the way up and down your guitar neck. This means that you are not only playing the basic triad, but are stringing a long line of notes, repeating the arpeggio across different octaves.Use all of these elements to develop your guitar techniques. When you pract ice all this stuff, you'llll improve your dexterity and comfort in the whole range on your guitar, and it will help you prepare for improvisation.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosJust like anything else, learning arpeggios will take some training, practice, and patience. Whilst they are, in some respects, a basic guitar technique, they are also used in some of the most outrageously complex guitar tricks there are.Teach YourselfYou can easily teach yourself arpeggios by following online guitar tutorials on your computer or tablet. You can find free online guitar lessons on YouTube, for example.Learn Arpeggios with a TeacherAlternatively, you could sign up for private guitar lessons with a qualified teacher. Classes will take place at home over a set period and your instructor can walk you through arpeggios and all the main major, minor, and major seventh chords - either in fingerpicking accompaniment or for soloing. If youâre trying to find a guitar class, get in touch with a local m usic store or check out noticeboards in supermarkets and post offices - thereâll often be ads posted by professionals offering private guitar lessons. A guitar course is a great thing to do, because alongside arpeggios, you will learn all sorts of things from power chords to vibrato to the pentatonic scale.Nail those arpeggios with a guitar teacher. The advantage of taking private guitar lessons is that you can avoid picking up any bad habits and learn the proper way to sit and hold yourself. 5 Ways to Stay Motivated During the Holidays
5 Ways to Stay Motivated During the Holidays That period of time between Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break is one of the biggest hurdles of the academic year. You get to indulge in a dose of the holidays for just a bit until you are very quickly pulled away and dropped right back in school for another few weeks. This wouldnt be so bad if Winter Break wasnt right around the corner waiting for you at the finish line. So how does one stay focused during this odd portion of the semester? The overlapping buzz of the recent holiday combined with the anxious anticipation of the coming one makes it difficult to think about anything else but food, family, and presents. Although it may be tempting to release yourself from putting any real effort toward schoolwork during this time, final exams are nearing and your mind must stay focused. Other than just pushing yourself to stay strong and remembering that only a few weeks stand between you and that month-long break, there are some other things you can do to make yourself feel better as well. Try out some of the following ideas to prevent any holiday slacking. Eat healthy: Youll have plenty of time to gorge on turkey, cookies, and tons of other delicious yet fattening foods once the next batch of the holiday season finally arrives. For now, save yourself that guilt of eating poorly and take care of your body. Aside from the fact that youre just being good to yourself, healthy foods are proven to improve brain function and keep you in a good state to produce great work. Keeping yourself on a stable and well-balanced diet will keep you energized and running well during this antsy time. You may want to take a look at this information on healthier school lunches. Limit gift shopping to the weekends: Its natural to want to get your gift shopping out of the way as early as possible. However, most of us end up procrastinating this effort and end up leaning to use this time period to get it done. If this is the situation you find yourself in, do your absolute best to keep this shopping within the weekends only. If you are done with classes for the day and decide to stop by a few stores on the way home, youre going to get distracted with holiday cheer and overly-involved in the process. Before you know it, this will be the only thing taking over your mind for the rest of the day leaving no time for studying. You can only afford to lose so many study days during this brief time before final exams. Separate your academic life from the shopping and/or brainstorming of what presents to buy. In the end, this will allow both endeavors to bring up better results. Here is a great list of three things to not do while you are studyingthat may help you when it comes to finals time. Switch up your routine: As much as you can, try to alter the way you go about your days. Obviously this is not the time to try out new recreational things after all, the point of this is to stay focused on your schoolwork. But you can change some of the details surrounding your work-producing schedule. For instance, sit in a different area of the library, go to a different coffee shop, listen to different music, etc. If you do the same thing every single day, itll be no wonder that youre getting restless and unable to detach yourself from the holidays. Changing things up a bit will keep you from getting bored and make the time go by quicker as you stay focused. Here is some great information on why extracurriculars boost college successthat you may want to take a look at as well. Clean your room: This is probably advice you hear often, but it really rings true during this time. Eliminating clutter and getting organized can make your days of studying a lot more tolerable. You can be certain that youll focus better if you dont have a mess distracting you. Additionally, youll be all set to pack away those presents you receive later on without having to worry about making room in the midst of such chaos. Establish a support system: Whether it be friends, family, or classmates, try to get a group of people to fall back on when you find yourself getting distracted and aimless in your work. Everybody around you has jobs to do before the core of the holiday season emerges, so come together to fight the distractions and accomplish your goals successfully. It is always easier to reach your objectives when you have the reassurance of others going after similar feats as well. Knowing youre not alone in the journey can keep you up and alert for as long as you need. Use each other to maintain balance through these last few weeks. When it all comes to down to it, you know you will be rewarded with a marvelous break very soon. Give yourself even more reason to enjoy that break by feeling proud of yourself for the work you accomplished. Go into the rest of the holiday season stress-free and ready to enjoy. Prove to yourself now that youll deserve it later on.
